County Trauma Nursing: A Legacy Built and Maintained by the Best of the Best.
The Department of Trauma is proud to be home to some of the most highly skilled and experienced nurses in the country. Our nursing model is distinctive. Trauma nurses at County are dual-trained in both trauma and burn care. They provide continuous care for injured patients, beginning at the point of arrival in the resuscitation bay and continuing through the critical care phase and into recovery.
These nurses are a central part of the trauma system. They staff the resuscitation area, the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and the Burn Intensive Care Unit. In each of these high-acuity environments, they bring clinical excellence, composure, and sound judgment. They are relied upon by physicians, trusted by colleagues, and respected by patients and families alike.
All trauma nurses in the department are trained in critical care and certified as Trauma Nurse Specialists (TNS). Many pursue additional certifications, including Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), and Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN). Their preparation is extensive, and their professionalism and consistency elevate the standard of care across the department.
In addition to their bedside responsibilities, trauma nurses collaborate with rehabilitation teams to support each patient’s recovery. They work closely with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, and pharmacy to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to care. Their contribution is essential, and their legacy continues to define the excellence of Cook County Trauma.
